Becancour is a city in Quebec (Canada) located in the Becancour Regional County Municipality and the Centre-du-Quebec administrative region. Bécancour is also part of the Trois-Rivieres metropolitan area.
The city is particularly known for its industrial and port park, focused on steelmaking and heavy industry, as well as for Quebec's only nuclear power plant, the Gentilly power station.
Becancour is located on the former seigneury of Becancour granted to Pierre Legardeur de Repentigny by the Compagnie de la Nouvelle-France on April 16, 1647.
Becancour, with an area of 441 km2, is located in the St. Lawrence Lowlands on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River opposite Trois-Rivieres. Its altitude ranges from sea level to 88 m south of Gentilly, the subsoil is composed of shales, sandstones and limestone dating from the Upper Ordovician.
The city shares its boundaries with the cities of Nicolet and Trois-Rivieres, the municipalities of Champlain, Batiscan, Saint-Pierre-les-Becquets, Sainte-Marie-de-Blandford, Saint-Sylvère, Saint-Wenceslas, Saint-Celestin and Grand-Saint-Esprit, the municipalities of the parishes of Sainte-Cecile-de-Levrard, Sainte-Sophie-de-Levrard and finally the municipality of the village of Saint-Celestin. The city enclaves the Abenaki territory of Wolinak.
